The Role Dairy Foods Play in Bone Health

Dairy foods are an excellent source of several essential nutrients that work together to help protect bones, including calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, protein and vitamin D. By enjoying three servings of low-fat or fat-free milk, yogurt or cheese every day as part of an overall healthy diet, families, especially children and adolescents in their peak bone-building years, can help reduce risk of osteoporosis later in life.

Dairy Foods and Heart Health

A trio of minerals - calcium, potassium and magnesium - all found in dairy foods may play an important role in maintaining blood pressure. Managing good Heart Health, a DASH diet* is rich in calcium, potassium and magnesium containing about two to three times the amounts most Americans get.

The DASH Diet - Consuming adequate amounts of milk and other dairy foods is emerging as a potential strategy to prevent the metabolic syndrome and its components. Individuals with the metabolic syndrome are at increased risk for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.

  • Start with a DASH breakfast to get a jump start on your day. Pick a dairy food, a piece fo fruit and a whole grain item.
  • Choose "combination foods" like fat-free yogurt mixed with fruit and topped with granola.
  • Re-think your drink - make low-fat milk your beverage of choice.
  • For those with lactose intolerance try yogurt or hard cheeses such as cheddar or Swiss, or drink lactose-reduced or lactose-free milk.
